Nunzio: Retarded Brooklyn market delivery boy Proval envisions he’s Superman and then falls in love with bakery associate Feldshuh. Soft tale improved by Proval’s fine acting. Alfredo Alfredo: All too normal Italian comedy in regards to a milque toast who triumphs and weds a seductive female, only to remorse his conquest. Lone interest is recognizing Hoffman’s good work in this uncommon setting (with a dubbed voice!). Cast includes Dustin Hoffman, Stefania Sandrelli, Carla Gravina, Clara Colosimo, Daniele Patella, and Duilio Del Prete. (98 minutes, 1972)
Stamboul Quest: Exotic amalgamation of romance and intrigue with German agent Loy finding that he is in love with American scholar Brent in WWI Turkey. Herman Mankiewicz’s script is based on a real tale. Cast includes Myrna Loy, George Brent, Lionel Atwill, C. Hemy Gordon, and Mischa Auer. (88 minutes, 1934)
Borderline: Bronson, minus Jill Ireland this time, is a border patrol officer looking for a murderer. Cast includes Charles Bronson, Bruno Kirby, Bert Remsen, Michael Lerner, Kenneth McMillan, Ed Harris, and Wilford Brimley. (105 minutes, 1980)
Irreconcilable Differences: A bittersweet comedy of a young couple that wed and found success till prosperity in Hollywood causes them to lose sense of what’s seriously vital in their lives. The outcome is that their 10 year old baby girl sues them for divorce! Cast includes Ryan O’Neal, Shelley Long, Drew Barrymore, Sam Wanamaker, Allen Garfield, Sharon Stone, and David Paymer. Down in the Delta: With her life a mess and essentially no desiere to work, lone mother Woodard boards the bus with her 2 kids to spend the summer in the Mississippi Delta, living with family members and worlking in their restaraunt. Episodic drama recoups from awkward start to better points for utter likability. Woodard beams and Freeman gives one of the best acting jobs of his career. Cast includes Alfre Woodard, Al Freeman, Jr., Wesley Snipes, Mary Alice, Esther Rolle, and Loretta Devine. (111 minutes, 1998)
Macaroni: An uptight American businessman goes to Naples and finds some incomplete personal business left over from his last visit while he was an amorous cadet in the Second World War. 2 of the planet’s most charming entertainers try to keep this film together, and nearly triumph. Cast includes Jack Lemmon, Marcello Mastroianni, Daria Nicolodi, Isa Danieli, and Maria Luisa Saniella. (104 minutes, 1985)
Hoop Dreams: Magnificent documentary follows 2 Chicago central-city kids (Arthur Agee and William Bars), who have fantasies of basketball stardom, over 4 years’ time. This quaint and immersing film plays like drama, not documentary, with the exception of that it takes spontaneous twists and turns no author might create. The film presents a scorching commentary on our school system, the indomitable power of the family, and the uncertainty of life. (109 minutes, 1994)
